Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management is delighted to announce the establishment of its Data Science Unit formed within the Research Management Department, effective April 1, 2023. The aim of the Unit is to further reinforce the use of alternative data.

In recent years, DX investment and R&D have flourished around the world. Investment in intangible assets, such as human capital, has become a major determinant of business success and corporate value creation. However, intangible assets can only be partially valued using traditional information such as financial data, and there are no established methods for valuing intangible assets.

In response to this environment and the challenges upon us, we have conducted company research and macroeconomic trend analysis using non-traditional (alternative) data and, as a result, we have developed the "Stay-at-home Index” and have also discovered a new type of alternative data through the collaboration with a data service company. In addition, leveraging our 30 years of quantitative fund management experience, we are developing a new equity fund that makes full use of alternative data and AI.

Through these endeavors, we hope to generate excess returns and increase corporate value through engagement with companies. To this effect, we have established the “Data Science Unit”, as a group dedicated to alternative data. In addition to investing in, and reinforcing human capital, we have chosen to further develop and build up our data science infrastructure.

With an entrepreneurial spirit, we will continue to explore and realize all new opportunities for a better future. We will strive to create a new standard of asset management that is appropriate for the times, while focusing on the original goal of devoting all our efforts to the growth of the assets that our clients have entrusted to us.
